Living Water started as a dream on Easter Sunday, 1989. On that warm spring morning, in a community center located in Manhattan Beach, California, Mike Leonzo and his wife Kathy, two newly married professionals, walked into a three year-old church called Oceanside Christian Fellowship.
From the minute that they stepped through the door, their view of "church" was radically changed. Everything that they had come to associate with church was missing - there were no steeples, no pews, no candles, no hymnals, and no organs. Instead they found a small group of people with a heart for God and a heart for those who had never been introduced to the saving power of Jesus Christ's love.
Almost instantly they realized that was where they belonged. For the next three years, they watched as the power of Jesus' love radically changed the lives of one person after the next. The broken were put back together. The unloved experienced for the first time the joy that comes from unconditional love. Those struggling with guilt and shame found forgiveness and healing. And in the process, Mike and Kathy fell in more and more in love with Jesus, more and more in love with each other, and more and more committed to church planting.
In 1997, almost a decade later, God placed a burden in both Mike and Kathy's hearts that it was time for Mike to leave his career as a product manager in a multinational corporation and enroll in seminary. So in August of 1997, they found themselves moving to Findlay, Ohio so that Mike could earn his Master's of Divinity degree.
For the next three years, God would demonstrate his amazing faithfulness as he taught, stretched, and provided for the Leonzo family through the rigors of seminary, the strain of part-time jobs, and the joy of three little kids. By the spring of 2000, with graduation rapidly approaching, Mike and Kathy sensed God calling them to start a new church—a church that would be called Living Water Community Church.
After moving back to Central Pennsylvania in the early summer of 2000, they began the task of assembling a group of people who were committed to the vision that God had placed on their hearts - to create a church that intentionally crosses racial, economic and societal boundaries for the expressed purpose of introducing people to the saving power of Jesus' love.
In July of 2000, Living Water began as a Thursday night Bible study with just four families. With each passing week, God faithfully brought more and more people and the group grew to over 20 individuals.
Then on January 21, 2001 - with 4" of snow covering the ground - Living Water held its Grand Opening Celebration Service. With joy in their hearts and 96 people in attendance, Living Water celebrated the beginning of Harrisburg's newest church.
Over the years, God has poured his blessing out upon the Living Water family. We continue to grow both numerically and spiritually. Each and every weekend, God draws more and more people to Living Water in the process of drawing them to himself. Lives are being changed, spiritual and physical needs are being met, the broken are finding healing, and most importantly men and women, boys and girls are coming to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
