One of the most underserved demographics in the evangelical Christian Universe is, according to one source, singles over the age of 40. Not anymore! At least, that is, if you attend Living Water Community Church. I had a chance to sit down and chat with Joanna Bopp, who is the coordinator and planner for FOCAS, an acronym for Fellowship of Christian Adult Singles.
FOCAS has been a long-standing ministry that was given new life in January of 2023 when a church family, sensing a need for singles to meet other singles, hosted a game night in their home. That evening led to more informal meet-ups until it was clear that more could be reached if it were promoted within the church. Joanna and others pitched the idea to church leadership, and FOCAS was reborn as an official ministry. Since then, there have been impromptu meet-ups at area diners, casual farmhouse barbeques, and playful competitions at bowling alleys and mini-golf courses. Attendance ranges anywhere from 5 to 15 people, so the atmosphere is engaging but not overwhelming. People from all ages, backgrounds, and life experiences have attended these events. Whether you are 30 or 90, never married, divorced, widowed, with or without kids, pets, or no pets, you will find yourself welcomed and included.

Under the umbrella of Adult Ministries, FOCAS has its very own Community Group and Bible study, led by Elder Jim Benna on Tuesday evenings. This adds to the ministry as a meaningful way to study the Bible with other Christian singles. Best of all, Elder Jim hosts the study on a Zoom platform, so you don’t even have to leave your house to participate.
